Game 2717470

ok, first off, here's an example of how not to play a Dragon. Here black chooses not to castle and immediately attacks the white king (including a questionable rook sac) Black then opens up central lines to his King with d5? and dxe4??

enough rambling...the point is that the best counter to a wing attack is a counterattack on the center, especially when your opponents king is there!

If it sounds confusing, it's because I just typed this out in 2 minutes before heading off for a tournament

Well, you are partially right. His opening play was fine. This is actually a variation of the Dragon called the Dragondorf. It's a combination between the Najdorf/Dragon, and Blacks idea is actually to not castle. His play after the opening phase of the game leaves something to be desired of course, but his opening probably shouldn't be criticized, and if you have the balls to do so, know that you are criticizing GM's like Shabalov, Ehlvest, I think Kudrin, Simon Williams, etc...🙂

BTW: Nice find on Qf4!

Qf4 was awesome, but you made a horrible blunder in saying something incorrect about the Dragon and Tony made you pay. 😵

Ha, sorry. 🙂 I'm not a particular fan of it at this point, but I think it's got potential.

Looks like Black threw in the towel a bit early. He still had some play, no?

I hate facing Nc6 as white - those lines just aren't as fun. Of course, after 2.d6 I almost always see the Najdorf and get to play one of my favorite sideline weapons. 🙂

Dragondorf huh? I stand humbled...

but I can't see the logic of using a Dragon setup while leaving your king in the center...

How do you mate someone on the kingside if they aren't there!? The idea I guess is to make White do something else for a while and start your play on the queenside, and then castle later once it's safe. I'm not totally convinced either, but I thought I'd let you know that alot of GM's have scored victories with this. Even Botvinnik played it!

Qb6 Qb8 and the queen is lost.I think the queen can be saved with e5 but that hangs the knight and black is lost.

yea, e5 is the only move for black, but that still loses
